I want you to get to know one of the future politicians in Maryland. He is a good brother and has been a friend to me since I meet him. Alonzo Washington was raised in Prince George’s County, MD and is a graduate of Prince George’s County Public Schools. Washington, the oldest of six children, grew up under difficult circumstances and spent his childhood residing in some of the county’s poorest and most crime ridden neighborhoods. Raised by a determined and relentless single mother, Alonzo Washington graduated from high school and was first member in his entire family to attend college. Alonzo is a proud first-generation college graduate of the University of Maryland in College Park (UMD) where he earned a bachelor of arts degree in Criminal Justice.

After graduating from UMD and working as a paralegal, he began his public service career as the Community Liaison for Prince George’s County Councilman Will Campos. Two years later, he was promoted to Chief of Staff, making him the youngest to ever serve in this position. In 2010, Washington was elected to the Democratic Central Committee, and was involved in the elections of Senator Victor Ramirez, Congressman Steny Hoyer and the MD Democratic Coordinated Campaign to re-elect Governor Martin O’Malley.

While working for Councilman Campos, Washington has been a leading force in organizing and starting several civic associations and has directed state and county economic development resources to projects throughout the district including the Gateway Arts District. Additionally, Washington has shut down nuisance businesses, worked to rehabilitate neighborhoods by establishing the Housing Investment Trust Fund, and cultivated relationships between residents and the county police to decrease crime.

Alonzo currently lives in Hyattsville, MD. He is a member of the Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee, Prince George’s County Young Democrats, the Roosevelt Democratic Club, Organizing Prince George’s, First Generation College Bound, the Gateway Arts District Management Team, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He is also a member of Living Waters Worship Center.
